I am Korean American and cis-male as well as a partner and a father. As a psychotherapist, I believe that bearing witness to my clients is a privilege. And that therapy, above all else, is an opportunity to more deeply experience life and learn new ways of caring for, nurturing, and courageously living it through methods evinced by studies and research.

I enjoy running, and played tennis competitively. I understand the impact of stress, historical pressures, and self-perception on one’s performance; and believe in combating these issues through goal-setting, planning, and “staying in the moment.”

In my “previous life,” I was an eagle scout. In the mountains, with friends, and doing good for others and our environment. A formative experience in so many ways.

Who are my clients?

I work with highly driven professionals in demanding roles within law, media, finance, arts, medicine, professional sports, and the non-profit sector. About two-thirds of my clients are men, a third identify as being a part of the LGBTQIA community, about two-thirds are people of color, and many are also engaging therapy for the first time — a courageous and important step, no doubt.

  • I worked as a Behavioral Health Psychologist at Crossover Health, a technology-forward, interdisciplinary health clinic, where I treated symptoms of OCD, depression, panic, and relationship issues, as well as work, performance, and health-related anxieties.

Crossover Health prided themselves on leveraging technology to provide a seamless experience to the client. They were also a startup at the time I joined. And as the interim Program Manager, I helped to build a digital first psychotherapy service, and was a key contributor in the development of their asynchronous mental health product.

The takeaway from this experience has helped me to consult with technology companies and more adeptly connect to the concerns of clients who work for technology companies of all shapes and sizes.

  • Expected to perform at a high level, in less time, around the clock, individuals in legal and financial industries often must trade some of today’s basic comforts to afford tomorrow’s pleasures.

Whether you’re on the partner track or pursuing an MD role, you’re having to prioritize work emails, deals, or projects, sometimes, over an intimate relationship, friendships, and personal interests. There isn’t enough time to do it all.

I’ve worked with individuals who are partners at law firms, business executives, and countless individuals in pursuit of these roles.

  • As a network provider, I am a psychologist to athletes and families associated with the NFLPA as well as the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

I enjoy running, and played tennis competitively. I understand the impact of stress, historical pressures, and self-perception on one’s performance; and believe in combating them through positive self-talk, goal-setting, planning, and “staying in the moment.”

  • As the Director of Mental Health at the Rutgers University-affiliated World Trade Center Clinical Center of Excellence, I developed a suite of psychotherapy services that addressed traumatic stress, life transitions, significant medical conditions (cancer).

Many clients, mostly men, came to the clinic for the first time. Some had experienced a precipitous decline after 9/11; some had experienced it after retirement. Undiagnosed PTSD, covert depression, and disaster- and work-related loss (e.g., colleagues who’ve passed) were common themes.

While more than half of the work I had done was in codifying policies and procedures, the clients I encountered in therapy are what I remember about this time.

  • As a Senior Psychologist at Bellevue Hospital Center, a major public hospital, many of my clients had experienced some type of trauma, loss, and significant life event — be it cancer or another major medical illness. Even as many were simply looking for a better way to manage their stress or anxiety, a not so insignificant number of people would also come to session in a state of crisis.

I completed a Clinical and Community Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine, where I provided social and psychological services to the formerly homeless, consulted on federally funded projects at the community and organizational levels, with stakeholders, administrators, managers, and direct care staff. This experience has deeply influenced my trauma-focused and person-centered approaches to engaging systems and working with patients and colleagues.

If you are a therapist or a therapist-in-training seeking supervision, feel free to inquire. I supervise graduate students at Rutgers University at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology as an adjunct faculty member. I was on the clinical faculty at NYU School of Medicine supervising predoctoral psychology interns and licensed clinical social workers.
